Our Intent:
Personal Development
At Central Lancaster High School our goal is to equip all pupils with the relevant skills they need for life outside the classroom. In our curriculum we endeavour to build personal resilience and through honest, open and relevant schemes of learning, we aim to empower our pupils to make informed, thoughtful and well considered choices when presented with the many challenges young people face in the modern age.
Based on the PSHE Association guidance we have planned a curriculum which focuses on the themes of Health and Wellbeing, Sex and Relationships and Living in the Wider World. This curriculum is regularly reviewed based on feedback from pupils, parent voice, the year 6 transition process and an annual report from Lancashire County Council based on the year 9 Health Needs Questionnaire. This regular feedback ensures our curriculum is meeting the needs of pupils in our school.
This curriculum is delivered through timetabled Life lessons, planned personal development activities in tutor time, assemblies and across the wider curriculum. Our provision is further enhanced by external visitors, including the fire service, police and further and higher education providers. The delivery of our personal development curriculum will take into account the age, ability, readiness and cultural backgrounds of children to ensure that all can fully access the personal development provision. Personal Development education helps to reduce or remove barriers to learning such as bullying, low self-esteem and unhealthy or risky behaviours.
As a result of the personal development programme of learning pupils will:
- know and understand how to keep themselves and others safe
- have the necessary skills to succeed in the wider world
- be confident to form and maintain positive relationships
- be tolerant and respectful of beliefs and lifestyles
- be physically, emotionally and socially healthy.
Additionally, we are proud to teach an LGBT* inclusive personal development curriculum and cover many issues aimed at supporting our LGBT* students, parents and local community.
