Central Lancaster High School Summer School 2021

Pupils in Year 7 enjoyed a wonderful Summer School during the summer holiday. The activities for the week were funded by the government’s summer school programme which enabled CLHS staff to host Year 6, soon to be Year 7, pupils for a full week.

The week long programme of activities took place from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th August enabling pupils to feel ready for their start with us on Friday 3rd September.

Mrs Smith led a wonderful week of learning activities including baking, bag printing, numeracy challenges and literacy sessions centred on the theme of animals for the week. Pupils were treated to a free full day at Lakeland Wild Animal Park where they got to experience hands-on activities with animals, led by the keepers at the zoo, including feeding the penguins and lemurs.

92 students were able to access our superb activities that prepared them for life at CLHS promoting our culture of commitment, creativity and community.

Mrs Smith was supported by a team of 15 CLHS staff including Mrs Prestwood our Head of Year 7. Our catering staff provided free breakfasts, lunches and snacks to fuel the pupils on their days of learning. All pupils received a free copy of Marcus Rashford’s book ‘You Are A Champion’ for them to read, as well as stationery prizes in readiness for their start to secondary education.

Parental and pupil feedback demonstrated that our summer school was a huge success and helped prepare pupils for their start at CLHS; it also helped to alleviate both pupil and parental worries regarding starting secondary school in a year in which many could not visit or attend a July intake day. Staff have commented on how settled the year group have been since their formal start with us in September.
