Literacy
What is it?
Literacy is the foundation of all learning. Reading, writing and oracy underpin every lesson in school. It is the shared responsibility of all teachers to ensure that the explicit teaching of literacy takes place.
Why is it important?
- Literacy supports learning. Pupils need vocabulary, expression and organisational control to cope with the cognitive demands of all subjects.
- Writing helps us to sustain and order thought.
- Better literacy leads to improved self-esteem, motivation and behaviour. It allows pupils to learn independently. It is empowering.
- Better literacy raises pupils’ attainment in all subjects.
What is the Central Line on Literacy?
Our three values and Literacy go hand in hand.
Community – we want to build a community of competent and developing readers who enjoy reading for pleasure
Commitment – in takes commitment to be a proficient reader and to keep developing and honing those skills
Creativity – reading allows our students to think creatively, imagining other possibilities and learning from texts
